The prestigious 2020 Specialty Under $10 Million Constructor Award was presented to Granite Construction for their work on the Union Pacific Railroad W. Colton Transfer Table. The West Colton Yard Transfer Table project is located at Union Pacific Railroad’s Mechanical Diesel Maintenance Facility in Colton, CA. Operating around the clock, the facility was experiencing impacts from down time due to failing infrastructure. Granite Construction was awarded a contract to remove and replace the existing mechanisms that enable the transfer table to be used as a moveable bridge. The table transfers locomotives from track to track into maintenance bays for service and repair.
The project required multiple long lead elements from around the world, such as special wheels, motors, and a state-of-the-art control system. Prior to construction and with 90% drawings, the project team lead constructability reviews, participated in schedule and risk workshops and provided input into final design development.
Granite worked collaboratively with the owner and design team to devise a host of innovative solutions to streamline the project throughout construction. They overcame extremely challenging scheduling and site logistics to maintain Union Pacific Railroad’s 24/7 operations with no interruptions to train traffic. The project team coordinated with the owner daily, sometimes hour by hour, to plan work around unpredictable train schedules.
Granite completed the project on-time, with zero OSHA violations, zero environmental citations and zero claims.
