Federal Government Moves to Intervene on Delta Water

The Sacramento Bee reported on August 23 that the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation has notified California officials of its intention to renegotiate a landmark 1986 agreement between federal and state water projects, with potentially major implications for millions of water users in Southern California.

The move represents a new tactic by the feds to increase water delivery to Central Valley farmers. As the Bee reported, it threatens to “significantly alter the balance of power between the state and federal governments as they share control of the water that flows through the Delta.”

The latest announcement comes as the federally controlled Central Valley Project and California’s State Water Project have clashed over Gov. Jerry Brown’s plans to build the proposed Delta Tunnels.
